Setup On-line Guide

This should get you going again if you lost the manual. Programming AutoWindow options can be done from the remote or by using a key in the door lock. We assume here you are using the remote. It takes about a minute to change a program option so allow enough time to finish the process before entering or exiting the car. You may sit in the car, or stand outside so long as you can see the alarm LED (on the driver's door) and the 4-way flashers. Take some time to experiment and get familiar with the effects of any option changes on all AutoWindow commands and usage of the vehicle.

Programming Lockout

AutoWindow ships with a Programming Lockout to keep Soft Switches set to factory defaults and to prevent programming until you are ready. The lockout control is a thin wire looping back into the unit. The Programming Lockout wire must be disabled before any options can be viewed or changed. The lockout is disabled by cutting the thin wire, or by attaching the optional temperature sensor to the module.
Re-joining a cut lockout wire by stripping its ends and twisting it back together, or by removing the temperature sensor forces all soft switches back to factory default settings - thus restoring AutoWindow to its original condition. AutoWindow will recall and reuse previous user settings if the lockout is again disabled in the future. You may attach a user-supplied SPST toggle switch to the cut lockout wire if you want a quick method of switching between stock and customized AutoWindow programs. "Closed" position will be factory settings, "open" position will be user settings.

Entering Setup Mode

You cannot enter Setup unless the Programming Lockout has been defeated (see above). The conditions for programming AutoWindow options are: car must be parked, turned off, keys out of ignition, headlights switched off, all doors and hatch/trunk shut and no accessories operating. Let the car sit like this for 20 seconds before beginning Setup. Then do this:

lock hold LOCK button for 15 seconds, or until the 4-way flashers blink once (alarm may honk). Immediately release the LOCK button on the remote while watching the alarm LED - it should stop blinking for a short while. Wait until AutoWindow starts to display Soft Switch settings on the alarm LED. Each Soft Switch setting is displayed in sequence as one or two blinks. If you don't want to change any settings, just let the blink sequence complete until normal alarm blinks resume on the LED.

Changing a Soft Switch

To change a Soft Switch setting, go into Setup (as above) but press UNLOCK immediately after the desired Soft Switch displays its setting on the alarm LED - before the next one begins! After making a change AutoWindow immediately resumes normal operation with the change now in effect. You may use the car and AutoWindow normally, or enter into Setup again to view or change more options.

Programming Troubleshooting

If the alarm LED continues to blink while holding LOCK, and 20 seconds have passed without the 4-way flashers blinking, check that the Programming Lockout has been disabled. The thin wire must be cut, or temperature sensor must still be attached. Has the sensor been removed or fallen loose? Did the cut wire short back on itself or is it possibly touching car metal?

If the alarm LED stop blinking for a short while after 4-way flashers blink but then resumes normal blinking without displaying any Soft Switches, check that you are immediately letting go of the LOCK button when 4-way flashers blink. Also check that all conditions are being met for entering into Setup (see above). Let go of LOCK, pause 20 seconds, and try again. Have you moved this AutoWindow from another car to a newer car?

If trouble persists check AutoWindow's status LED and report what it is doing as well as the alarm LED, and button pushes you are making for Setup.

Soft Switch Settings

Soft Switches are displayed on the alarm LED in the order shown in the table below. AutoWindow (and previously volkswindow) have used the following options in the order shown below since summer 2002. Options and table positions have changed a little over time, some experimentation on your unit will tell. Contact AutoWindow if you cannot determine what each option is doing after making a change. For all units ever produced, changing all settings to "1 blink" returns the unit back to its originally shipped condition and this is the best place to start. Change one option at a time and use several commands to check results and confirm function.

(A "full" VENT command (unlock unlock lock) will not be closed by the sensor when configured this way.)

** If switches #6 and #7 are both set to "2 blinks" then all venting is turned OFF and no venting commands will work. Older units may not work this way, but offer a fourth vent gap setting instead when both vent controls are set to "2".
